With
summer approaching we have two community events scheduled, one in June and
the other in July. On June 14th the annual
Heritage Day Festival will be held. This event gets underway with
a parade along Lawson Road starting at Centennial School at 11:00 a.m. and
finishing in Highland Creek. Festivities then continue throughout the day
in Highland Creek. This annual community event for the whole family is
sponsored in part by CCRA. Plan to attend!
The other
community event is our annual Summer Concert Series held
July 6th, 13th and 20th at the Port
Union Recreation Centre. This is a wonderful way to spend a relaxing
summer evening listening to some great musical entertainment. These
events are also co-sponsored by CCRA. Events Chair Heather Lemieux has
further information on the concerts in this newsletter.
Last
month we launched our annual membership campaign. A number of streets
requiring canvassers were listed in last month’s newsletter. If your
street was on that list please consider volunteering to canvass even if it
is only a few homes. The membership campaign is our only major fund
raising event of the year. Remember you can pay your membership through
our web page, or mail it in to our address shown in the newsletter or drop
it off in our drop box located in the Port Union Community Centre.
Recently
there has been media coverage regarding the parking situation at the
bottom of Port Union Rd adjacent to the Village Common. CCRA raised the
parking issue as a concern when the initial idea for a Village Common and
waterfront trail was proposed in the early 1990’s. Unfortunately, despite
our protests, no provision was made for parking in the planning approvals
for this area. There is now only one vacant parcel of land presently
owned by a developer. This land has changed ownership a number of times
and each time it does, the value increases. Despite the increased value
we understand that GO Transit is considering purchasing this site. Even
though the parking area would be used for passengers using the GO train
during the week, it would help eliminate parking problems on weekends. As
a matter of interest a large parking lot is available at the end of
Beechgrove Ave. (beside the sewage treatment plant) for those wishing to
access the trail from the west.
Looking
ahead to the fall, we will be holding our Annual General Meeting in
October. I hope that some of you would give serious consideration to
serving on the executive. It is a rewarding experience that helps to
maintain a strong, vibrant community.
This is
our last newsletter until September.
Hope
everyone has a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer.
